To be an Australian citizen you must:
- Be a permanent resident for last 12 months and lived here for last 4 years.
- Good character is a necessity.
- Aim to build a close regular association with Australia.
If you are a permanent resident of Australia and satisfy the other eligibility criteria, you may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship by conferral.
Citizenship by descent
To be an Australian citizen by descent you must have been born outside Australia and when you were born, at least one of your parents must have been Australian Citizens.
Adoption outside Australia by an Australian citizen
If you were adopted outside Australia by an Australian citizen and the adoption was done outside Australia in accordance with the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption or a bilateral arrangement between Australia and other Country.
Child of former Australian citizen
You will be eligible for Australian citizenship if one of your parents used to be an Australian citizen and your birth was of outside Australia.
Commonwealth Child Migration Scheme
If you arrived in Australia between 22nd September to 31st December 1967 without your parents, you are eligible for the citizenship under this scheme.
New Zealand citizen
To be eligible for Australian citizenship you must hold a permanent visa or are “protected special category visa” holder and over 18 and of good character but need to meet legal requirements.
Partner or spouse of an Australian citizen
If your spouse or partner of an Australian Citizen, you just need to fulfil the requirements by yourself as one by Conferral would do.
